Affordable Housing for Seniors

The lack of affordable housing has the greatest negative impact on the quality of the lives of seniors living in San Diego. It is not uncommon for seniors living on less than $800 to pay $650 for a tiny room downtown. Every other facet of their life is impacted when they try to make ends meet on what is left. There is not enough money for food and medication, meaning they struggle to survive and their health suffers.

Unfortunately, there are not enough affordable housing units for seniors – and other populations – in San Diego. The situation is compounded by the continued loss of Single Room Occupancy (SRO) units downtown to make way for new high rise condos and lofts. SRO's, known for their tiny rooms and shared bathroom facilities, have been the primary housing for low-income seniors for years because of their historically low rents. Supply and demand works. As supplies of SRO units dwindle, the prices for the remaining units are skyrocketing.

Senior Community Centers actively advocates for the creation of more affordable housing for seniors throughout the county. We support increasing the supply of tax credits for construction, dollars for supportive housing services and a recognition that now is the time to act. Accessing Supportive Housing (visual)
