Cross Cultural Senior Mental Health

Although the incidence of mental illness is increasing among the senior population, the stigma remains. Senior Community Centers works hard to encourage all seniors to get help if they need it, but cultural barriers and stereotypes make it difficult to reach some of the people who need assistance the most in dealing with depression, dementia, and other illnesses.

The Cross Cultural Senior Mental Health program teams our case managers with doctors and psychiatric social workers who use linguistically and culturally competent techniques to improve the overall effectiveness of mental health services for the culturally diverse seniors served by Senior Community Centers. Our community partner in this program is Sharp HealthCare/Sharp Behavioral Health.

Together, the Sharp team and our clinical staff:

  • Provide mental health education through seminars and materials at the center
  • Identify seniors exhibiting signs of mental illness and conduct initial assessments
  • Develop individual mental health treatment plans
  • Provide psychiatric services
  • Provide supportive services for seniors receiving psychiatric treatment (nutrition, housing options and health care)
  • Assist seniors in living more productive, satisfying, and healthy lives by improving their mental health status
