Nutrition

Meals
Imagine waking up with no food in your house and no money in your pocket. Many of our seniors face that situation every day. The meals we serve 365 days a year are often the only source of nutrition available, and if we weren't there, hundreds of elderly living below the poverty level would go hungry.

Each meal provides 1/3 of the Recommended Daily Allowance of calories, protein, fiber and vitamins/minerals for older adults, a critically important part of helping seniors stay healthy and active. We ask for donations but no one is ever turned away if they can't give. We also do not place seniors on waiting lists for our services. Every senior in need is served a meal with dignity and respect.

We also deliver two meals each day to over 200 homebound seniors who are too frail or sick to come to our congregate sites. If you are a senior over the age of 60 in the downtown area and need a meal or know someone who does, you can find out more by contacting Gloria Alexander at (619) 235-6538 x307.

The nutrition program is overseen by a Registered Dietician and our staff includes professional chefs who are experts at preparing healthy, appetizing, and nutritious meals. View a sample monthly menu.

Approximately 30 percent of the funding for the program is provided by the Federal Government under Title III-C of the Older Americans Act. Additional funds are received through donations from the seniors (averaging about 18¢ per meal), gifts from private donors, corporate support, and foundation grants.
