Many of the seniors we serve have trouble maintaining a stable housing environment. Sometimes this is due to physical or mental health conditions; other times the problem has been an inability to handle their finances. Our supportive housing program is designed to provide people like Malcolm with options that allow them to live independently but in an environment that provides them with the support services they need to stay housed. It has been recognized by The Corporation for Supportive Housing as a national model for the future of senior housing.
We strive to improve or maintain the quality of life for low-income seniors by:
Providing Access to Affordable Housing:
By providing seniors with their own furnished studio or one-bedroom apartment at below-market rents, residents are able to focus their energies on addressing their other pressing needs, especially nutrition, physical and mental health concerns.
Promoting and Supporting Good Nutrition:
Proper nutrition is critical for the elderly. Many age-related illnesses and frailties can be improved with a healthy diet. For low-income seniors, it is often their diets that suffer significantly as they are forced to choose between food or paying the rent.
That is why we offer two nutritious meals a day that meet all of our senior’s dietary requirements. A healthy breakfast and lunch are served in the dining room and each residence is equipped with a refrigerator and the means to prepare snacks or dinner.
Providing Essential Support Services:
Senior Community Centers strives to help seniors successfully live on their own by providing a variety of services that address anything that may be a barrier to maintaining their apartments. These services include social work case management; mental health counseling; health education; healthcare assessments and referrals; social, educational and recreational activities and more. Each new resident completes a thorough intake process where an assessment of her/his service needs is conducted. Working closely with a case manager, s/he develops a plan that addresses previously unmet needs and establishes achievable goals regarding healthy living and community involvement.
