For many seniors, the Gary and Mary Senior Wellness Center is more than just a building – it’s a place of connection and care. Neil first walked through the doors of the Wellness Center five years ago, and since then, it has become a cornerstone of his daily life.
“The one thing that I noticed about this place immediately is the quality of people that work here. I’ve been to other centers. What amazed me about this place was that everybody was so nice and authentic. The staff here really cares about seniors…they’re not pretending. And that’s what got me. I wish everyone else cared the same way about senior citizens.”
As a divorcee who lives alone, Neil has found more than just a place to spend his days. He’s found a community with other seniors and understands the struggles they face due to isolation and loneliness. “There are people that are alone here and do feel lonely and I help them by talking to them. We share our life experiences. Everyone here has lived for years and have incredible stories, so I’ve learned a lot from my fellow seniors.”
Now more than ever, seniors need to stay connected. Coming to the Wellness Center is a lifeline for many. Socially isolated seniors are 50% more likely to develop dementia, have a 29% increased risk of heart disease, and 32% increased risk of stroke (CDC 2022).
“I come here for the people because I’m single now. I come for the camaraderie. The older I get, the more I realize that it’s important to socialize. This place is like a sanctuary. I’ve made friends here,” says Neil.
In December 2022, Neil started hosting an event called Author Hour at the Wellness Center, giving back to the community that he values so much. Using his expertise as a published fiction author with six true crime novels, the self-proclaimed “San Diego’s Uncrowned King of Noir” reads chapters from his books and discusses them with other seniors who look forward to the monthly event. “It feels good, it feels like I’m giving back,” says Neil. “They’re seeing a part of me that they’ve never seen before. The fact that I’m 71 years old, I’m writing, I keep my mind active. It’s inspirational to a lot of people here.” He gets to share his passion for creative writing with his friends. It also offers a sense of purpose.
Whether it’s chatting with friends during lunch service, or hosting his monthly Author Hour activity, the Wellness Center is a place Neil comes to connect with others.
Socialization plays a vital role in maintaining the mental, emotional, and physical health of senior citizens, contributing to a higher quality of life and greater overall well-being. Neil’s experience highlights how essential senior centers like the Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center are.
