When Vanne fell on hard times, she found herself sleeping outside the Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center. Thankfully, Serving Seniors was there to lend a helping hand. When she connected with Mark, a social worker, she learned about different resources that she didn’t know existed. From using the computers at the Wellness Center, to getting help with filling out paperwork, Serving Seniors has been there offering her support and care every step of the way. Vanne now has temporary shelter, access to hygiene needs, employment, and is in the process of securing benefits to her late husband’s pension.
“I was helped and someone cared about me,” says Vanne. Not only that, but she no longer feels alone because there are also other seniors in her situation that need direction and help with the next step. “It’s a needed organization. It’s like a little community at Serving Seniors.” Since receiving our services, Vanne has reported being in a much better place.
San Diego County has one of the highest rates of poverty for seniors. Seniors are becoming homeless at an alarming rate: sleeping in their cars, storages units, and on the streets. Every senior deserves to have a place called home.
