Established in 1970, Serving Seniors helps San Diego County’s low-income seniors overcome poverty through whole-person, wraparound support including meals, housing, health and social services, and enrichment activities. We work at numerous sites across the county and in the homes of hundreds of homebound seniors. Our flagship Gary & Mary West Senior Wellness Center in downtown San Diego is unlike any other senior center in the nation. Bringing together a range of supportive services under one roof, the Senior Wellness Center operates 365 days a year and offers two floors of integrated care, including health and social services, housing navigation, enrichment activities, lifelong learning, a Cyber Café and linkage to over 25 onsite direct service partners, including a senior dental center. Last fiscal year, we provided over 1,400,000 meals and coordinated services to 6,800 older adults.

Job Purpose

The Nutrition Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the dining room and kitchen at the congregate site. The supervisor is responsible for the management of food service staff and dining room processes.  This individual is the point of contact for the center as they coordinate with the Nutrition Services, Health and Social Services and Facilities teams.


Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists Senior Director of Nutrition Programs with managing staff at congregate site and supporting other sites, including:
  • Hire and train new food service workers
  • Monitor and enforce all safety rules; actively involved in spot checking driver paperwork procedures to evaluate and ensure accuracy, retraining if necessary
  • Surveys client satisfaction and investigate client complaints; addressing and resolving escalated client service issues in a timely and thorough manner
  • Instill and model strong customer service skills for all staff, seniors and volunteers.
  • Prepare staff evaluations and timecards for food service staff.
  • Act as a liaison with all the food service vendors at the site.
  • Oversee the counting and collection of all meal donations.
  • Act as a concierge to seniors, guests and volunteers in the dining room.
  • Ensure all meal reports are completed.
  • Responsible for distributing the monthly menus at the site.
  • As a mandated reporter for Elder Abuse, report any suspicious circumstances or suspected abuse to Adult Protective Services.
  • Ensure all appropriate policies and procedures are followed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and key experience to successfully perform the key roles of the job; or five-seven years related experience with a High school Diploma or GED 
  • Minimum of three years previous supervisory/administrative experience required 
  • Food service experience preferred
  • Strong computer skills in data entry and proficient in of all Microsoft Office suite applications

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  The employee is regularly exposed to normal risks of working in an office environment (e.g., risks due to heavy computer use).
