What is the Senior Nutrition Program

Funded by the Older Americans Act (OAA), programs across the U.S. serve as hubs where people 60+ find healthy meals and vital services within their community that strengthen social connections and promote well-being. Every March, during National Nutrition Month, we celebrate the significance of the Senior Nutrition Program.

Why does it matter

San Diego County has one of the highest rates of poverty among fixed income seniors as they struggle to keep up with skyrocketing costs. But 60% of San Diego’s seniors lack the income to cover their most basic needs, including food (Elder Index). In the most recent survey of Older Americans Act nutrition program participants, 80% of participants indicated their health had improved because of the meals and 90% reported the program kept them independent (Administration for Community Living 2023).

The impact

Serving Seniors’ Senior Nutrition Program ensures more than 9,500 low-income unduplicated seniors have access to a stable, nutritious diet by providing over 1.5 million congregate and home-delivered meals a year at no-cost to them. A consistent diet and proper nutrition are fundamental to healthy aging and positive health outcomes.

For older adults, staying socially active and intellectually engaged also plays a crucial role in their mental and physical health. Socially isolated seniors are 50% more likely to develop dementia, have a 29% increased risk of heart disease, and 32% increased risk of stroke (CDC 2023).

Seniors who come to our centers can engage with other seniors, creating lasting connections. At the Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center in East Village and the Judith L. Seltz Senior Wellness Center in Clairemont, a meal is often the first step to discover additional support. Seniors can schedule appointments with case managers to get help navigating complex resources like applying for health insurance or receiving social security benefits. Both centers also offer enriching activities to help seniors learn new skills, keep their mind sharp, and stay active.
