Just one talk with a stranger on the bus changed Joyce’s life. She was facing homelessness after the home she was living in was going to be foreclosed.
That stranger told her “I have the perfect place for you.”
And he was correct. She doesn’t remember the man’s name but when she talks about him, you can hear gratitude in her voice. Because of that stranger, Joyce found a loving community at Potiker Family Senior Residence where she has lived for the past 10 years.
She describes the location of Potiker Family Senior Residence being just right for her. She likes the convenience of living near a bus stop, trolley stations, library and within walking distance of Albertsons. Joyce is able to continue to work, be independent, and have her own space.
“I’m happy because I never experienced homelessness,” she shares.
Every senior deserves a place to call home, but many are struggling. Joyce’s story is not an isolated one.
According to the 2025 Point-in-Time Count conducted by the Regional Taskforce on Homelessness, adults over 55 now make up 1 in 3 of San Diego’s homeless population. Behind these numbers are real people – real lives affected by the lack of affordable housing
San Diego County’s unhoused and housing-insecure seniors need immediate assistance to stop the rise of senior homelessness and ensure access to age-friendly housing they can afford and sustain.
