“It’s all about love. Everyone here at Potiker Family Senior Residence – the kitchen staff, the back-office staff, security, management – everyone has made me feel loved.”
Martha has been living at Potiker Family Senior Residence, one of our affordable housing developments in the heart of downtown for almost two years now, as part of our rental subsidy program for older adults called “Seniors Safe at Home.”
“Seniors Safe at Home”, a partnership with Serving Seniors and the Lucky Duck Foundation, helps seniors experiencing a housing crisis, such as facing eviction, or situations where fixed incomes simply cannot keep up with sharp rises in inflation and housing costs.
The County of San Diego's Health and Human Services Agency's (HHSA) 2023 Cost of Living for Older Adults report found that less than half of seniors age 65+ had enough income to keep up with basic living costs.
Before this, Martha found herself in a tough spot after having to move out of her brother’s home and not having enough income for the rental market in San Diego. On top of that, she was recuperating from a major surgery. Luckily, her social worker connected her with Serving Seniors, where not only she found an affordable and accessible studio apartment but a caring community.
“Serving Seniors is a blessing. I feel so safe and well-connected. It would be devasting if I wasn’t living here,” says Martha. Living at Potiker Family Senior Residence, she is able to get wraparound services all in one place. From congregate dining to home-delivered meals, fitness activities, socialization, health education, case management, the ADA-compliant apartments, Martha describes each step of care for seniors as well-thought of in every area. “For many reasons, you don’t ever have to feel isolated here.” If seniors need to get groceries or run errands, they can walk a block down the street to Albertson’s or catch the bus or trolley, which is within walking distance.
Martha didn’t think that she was going to live at one point because of a major life surgery she had a few years ago. Now she is getting her strength back and the surgery enhanced her perspective on life. She is grateful for her blessings and wants to share her light with others.
Martha says, “To anyone that has donated to Serving Seniors, you are lifesavers.”
THANK YOU for caring for seniors.
