Many older adults are struggling to maintain their independence as they age. Even being able to prepare a simple meal, or heat one up in the microwave, is an important milestone in staying self-sufficient.
In a national survey, 3 out of 4 Senior Nutrition Program participants say it has improved their health. Each meal provided to a senior through congregate dining and home-delivered meals reduces food insecurity and malnutrition.
"Having the meals delivered is something I look forward to. They're healthy meals with fruits and vegetables, and good proportions," shares Lynn.
Lynn is 81 years old and is losing her vision. Unable to drive, getting groceries is a struggle. And on her fixed income, the high cost of food delivery services makes it even harder for her to access nutritious meals. Even going to a food bank was a challenge, unless she was able to get a ride with a friend.
But now, Lynn has consistent meals she can rely on, and she has so many favorites. From the meatballs, scrambled eggs and sausage, breakfast and lunch ready-to-eat meals, always put a smile on her face.
With her limited vision, being able to simply put a meal in the microwave gives her confidence and comfort. And because her dental issues make chewing difficult, Lynn has to be cautious of what she eats. Having soft food options like the fruit cups that are provided with the meals makes it easy to enjoy.
As a widow who spends most of her time at home, sometimes the meal delivery is the only other interaction she has that day. She looks forward to seeing her delivery driver, who she makes brownies for to show her appreciation.
Lynn is trying to take care of herself the best that she can because it’s important for her to maintain a level of independence.
