The fear and uncertainty of not knowing if you’ll be able to afford your rent next month is something no one should face, especially our aging community. Unfortunately, with the continuous increase in one of the costliest cities in the country, this is the reality for many seniors in San Diego.

After budgeting for food, medications and other essentials, the difference between being housed and being homeless can just be a few hundred dollars.

At one point, 88-year-old Joyce, who lives in our affordable senior housing complex at Harris Family Senior Residence was in this predicament. Fortunately, through case management support, she was provided with rental assistance, which helped close a critical gap.

But it was more than rent, it was a peace of mind. “It was like you took 50 pounds off my back,” says Joyce. She doesn’t know how she would be able to live here without assistance.

Joyce said her cardiologist noticed she was no longer hyperventilating the same way. “Until you’ve been in a tough financial situation, you don’t realize how stressful and how hard it really is.” She connected that improvement directly to the reduced stress from rental assistance.

Joyce is a longtime architect and designer who worked until approximately two and a half years ago. She has significant health challenges, including serious heart issues, strict fluid and sodium restrictions, and has to take extensive daily medications. She recently stopped driving due to safety concerns related to dizziness and health changes.

Joyce repeatedly described Serving Seniors as the reason residents smile, connect, participate, and receive help. “I really, really respect and appreciate all of you because you really do help.”

Your support made this possible for Joyce. As more seniors struggle to afford housing in San Diego County, this proven prevention program serves as a powerful tool for keeping vulnerable older adults safely housed, healthier, and connected to the people and resources that help them thrive.
