Every one of us is aging. Yet stereotypes, assumptions, and discrimination based on age continue to shape how people are treated in our communities, workplaces, healthcare settings, and everyday interactions.
That's why on October 9, Ageism Awareness Day, Serving Seniors is proud to join organizations across the country in raising awareness about ageism and promoting age-inclusive communities.
Ageism refers to stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel), and discrimination (how we act) toward others or ourselves based on age. While ageism is often associated with seniors, it impacts all of us because aging is a lifelong experience.
The American Society on Aging's theme for this year is "Age Inclusion Is the Way Forward." How we think about aging influences everything from public policy and investment decisions to workplace culture and community engagement. When we rely on outdated assumptions about age, we create barriers that affect individuals, families, and communities.
The truth is that aging is not a single experience. Older adults are caregivers, mentors, volunteers, workers, advocates, friends, and community leaders. They bring skills and perspective that enrich our neighborhoods and strengthen our region.
At Serving Seniors, we see those contributions every day. The older adults we serve are active participants in our community and are vital members of San Diego's social fabric. Their experiences, talents, and stories remind us that aging is diverse, meaningful, and deeply connected to the lives of people of every generation.
Creating a more age-inclusive society starts with challenging assumptions and recognizing our shared humanity. It means fostering connections between generations, using respectful and inclusive language, and ensuring that people of all ages have opportunities to participate, contribute, and thrive.
This Ageism Awareness Day, we're encouraging our community to join the conversation. By talking openly about ageism and promoting a more realistic understanding of aging, we can help build communities where everyone feels valued, respected, and included.
Because age isn't what divides us. It's something we all share.
