For older adults, community can make all the difference.
Rudy has been coming to Serving Seniors' Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center for 10 years. He describes it as a safe haven; one that keeps him grounded and connected. Here, he shares meals with friends, spends time in the game room and enjoys the sense of belonging he has found there.
“I enjoy coming here. I really do. It’s a good place to come to fellowship with other seniors,” says Rudy.
Beyond friendship, the Serving Seniors provides vital support that keeps him on track. Rudy has been able to connect with our case managers for housing assistance, as well as medical and dental care. These resources are life-changing for older adults in need.
Rudy understands how difficult it can be to find stable, age-appropriate employment - especially work that provides enough income to keep up with the continuous rise in the cost of living.
According to the 2026 Point-In-Time Count, adults ages 55 and older, now make up one-third of the homeless population in San Diego County.
Rudy himself has come close to experiencing homelessness himself multiple times due to rises in cost of living.
“We need more affordable housing for seniors,” he says reflecting on how his parents could afford a home in San Diego, that is now out of reach for many older adults today.
Stories like Rudy’s remind us why this work matters. At Serving Seniors, we’re committed to advocating for solutions that help older adults stay housed, healthy, and connected.
