Dec. 8: Serving Seniors Raises Over $80,000 on GivingTuesday

The San Diego nonprofit raised a record amount to feed seniors facing food insecurity this holiday season.

San Diego, Calif., December 8, 2020—Serving Seniors, a San Diego-based nonprofit helping older adults in poverty live fulfilling lives through health-promoting services, announced today that the organization raised over $80,000 on Giving Tuesday. This milestone is just the beginning of Serving Seniors’ holiday giving season where the community comes together for at-risk seniors.

“This year is particularly special given the pandemic we all face,” said Kimberly Jenks, director of philanthropy at Serving Seniors. “Our seniors are facing exponential hardship as they are the most at-risk population, and we are eternally grateful to all of our donors who make it possible to provide this beloved group with meals and critical services.”

Even in light of tough times given the pandemic, Serving Seniors saw unprecedented giving and far exceeded the organization’s goal. Serving Seniors received an anonymous donation that matched dollar-for-dollar given up to $25,0000. Each and every dollar donated supports the organizations Miracle in a Meal program and ensures that the at-risk seniors are fed throughout this holiday season and into the coming year. The total amount raised on Giving Tuesday will fund over 20,000 meals for seniors across San Diego County. On top of the monetary donations, Serving Seniors received essential items that go directly to the seniors who need them.

“Our demand for meals has nearly quadrupled since the beginning of 2020 and continues to rise every week,” continued Jenks. “The selfless giving this year allows us to begin meeting this demand and we hope to continue keeping pace as the holiday season continues.”

Giving Tuesday kicked off the organization’s Miracle in a Meal season and embodies that no older San Diegan should face hunger alone.  Serving Seniors has served over 1,000,000 meals since the start of the pandemic thanks to the generosity of the community.  The agency is not limiting the Miracle in a Meal campaign to Giving Tuesday. The campaign is active throughout the entire holiday season, through the end of the year.
