Serving Seniors Named 2025 Top Workplace in San Diego County
One of just seven nonprofits in 12th year on list
For its seventh straight year, Serving Seniors was named one of The San Diego Union-Tribune’s “Top Workplaces for 2025.” The annual awards are based on anonymous employee feedback. A majority of Serving Seniors’ employees participated in this year’s assessment.
Serving Seniors is one of just seven nonprofits out of 105 employers named to the 2025 list. It has made the list in 12 out of the 13 years the awards program has taken place.
This year’s recognition comes during a leadership transition while navigating the growing impact of inflation, benefit reductions, and price increases affecting low-income and homeless older adults in the San Diego region. Serving Seniors employees have risen to the challenge of meeting increased needs through empowerment and teamwork.
“Our employees assist every client with grace, dignity, and determination,” said Serving Seniors President and CEO Melinda Forstey. “Their jobs are difficult on the best days, but they always make it work no matter what challenges they encounter. They support each other and are always willing to step forward to help their teammates.”
The Philadelphia-based survey firm Energage determines the recipients based on a scientific confidential employee survey process. The survey asks 26 questions to measure 15 drivers of culture critical to organizational success such as alignment, execution, and connection.
“Top Workplaces awards are a celebration of good news,” said Eric Rubino, Energage CEO. “They exemplify the significance of a people-first workplace experience, reminding us that employees are the heart of any thriving organization.”
In addition to nominations, Energage reached out to eligible companies in San Diego County with 50 or more employees. This year, 3,951 employers in San Diego County were invited to participate and 127 agreed. Employers can be public, private, nonprofit, or governmental.
Employers were ranked based on their employee survey feedback and win recognition if the aggregated employee feedback score exceeds national benchmarks. Engage has established these benchmarks based on feedback from 30 million employees nationwide over 19 years. Survey results must include a minimum 35% of all employees to be considered valid.
Serving Seniors staff are supported by the contributions of more than 800 compassionate volunteers who are also devoted to the mission of the organization, as well as the many generous donors who make their work possible.
